How can anyone who wants Britain to be prosperous and truly democratic vote for Theresa May to stay in Downing Street?

By going for a super-hard Brexit, May is knowingly steering Britain into economic ruin and isolation, and she doesn’t seem to care.

She is a compulsive liar, driven by personal ambition, who can’t be trusted with our future.

The “leave” campaign called for Britain to regain its sovereignty. But May has tried to grab power by keeping Parliament – the locus of our sovereign democracy – out of taking decisions on the most important issue of our lifetime. When the courts forced her to go to Parliament, she stopped her MPs from representing the views of their constituents.

The “leave” campaign championed free trade, but May is bent on leaving the Single Market and the Customs Union – by far the world’s best free trade system.

May talks of “healing divisions” but she inflames them by her haughty disdain for all who disagree with her.   She ignores the Scots, putting the unity of our Kingdom at risk. She dismisses Irish concerns over a hardening of the border, reopening prospects of violence.

May has alienated health workers, scientists and academics, trade unions, farmers, small businesses, and all of us who value peace and care for human rights. She talks of “the will of the people” but has totally ignored the 16 million voters who, just one year ago, followed the government’s advice – including her own advocacy for the single market – and voted to stay in the EU. At her own peril, she has turned a deaf ear to the young – the under 55’s who count for 70% of the population. It is they who will have to deliver the goods, but they will hardly throw their energies behind a project that tramples on their aspirations.

May’s Brexit is bound to fail, and we shall be the losers.

If we want a decent future for our children and grandchildren, we must vote for anyone who can stop May in her tracks.
