I received notice from a friend this morning that a Parliamentary Petition has been launched to revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU. Both of us have sugned it.
If the petition receives 100,000 signatures, this will mean that it will be debated in Parliament.
Revoking Article 50 can be done unilaterally by government before 29th March (or, on the case of an extension, till the end of the revised A50 period.. We would automatically remain in the EU. We would not have to go through with at least more years of painful negotiations about our future relationship with the EU – nor would we run the huge risk of “crashing out” with no deal.
This offers a democratic “backstop” position in the possible event that Parliament should not approve the People’s Vote proposal for a second referendum!
